Monday Dec 16, 2019
On this episode of Inside Today's Country, I chat with David from The Washboard Union.
The year could not have been scripted any better: two wins at the CCMA Awards – including Group or Duo of the Year for the second consecutive year – and becoming the first country band to ever win the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year; playing to over 200,000 fans from coast to coast in Canada, plus shows in France, Spain and the U.S.; and becoming staples at Canadian radio with a continuous flow of high-charting singles.
Today, the country trio opens a new chapter with the release of a brand new single, “Country Thunder."
“After walking out of this writing session, we all had this elated feeling like we had written something really special. When the three of us woke up the next morning singing it, we knew that was a pretty good sign that we were right,” says The Washboard Union. “We love this song and hope our fans will love it too.”
THE WASHBOARD UNION:
Since their inception in 2016, road warriors and country radio stalwarts The Washboard Union have the well-earned reputation as Canada’s preeminent country band with a growing international footprint. They continue to be one of the most exciting, recognizable and talked about bands on the country music scene. Best friends Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts share an unbridled love for the art of songwriting and storytelling that has resonated with audiences from North America to Europe, performing in front of over 200,000 fans in 2019 in Canada, France, Spain and the U.S. Their music and dynamic live performances have set them apart as one of the most unique talents in country music today. They are the 2-year-reigning Group of the Year at the CCMA Awards and winners of the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year, bringing their career music award total to 27 wins.

Sunday Dec 08, 2019
On this episode I chat with the brothers from New Law. They are from Calgary Alberta Canada.
Harmonies and that brother sound!! Nothing beats it and these Calgary brothers are making an impact on the country music scene. Cayd, Ty and Dayne Greiner are NewLaw. These brothers are musicians, songwriters, singers, athletes and students.
Music is a way of life for these brothers who were influenced by the music of The Beatles, Eagles, CCR, Johnny Cash, and Thomas Rhett. They began with piano lessons under mentor Mike Little, then added guitar, drums and vocals. They joined the KLM Rock School for two years under Juno award winner Mike Little and were encouraged to write their own songs.
They have completed 2 original EPs to date with new singles ready for release this year.
The 2015 EP started their songwriting success as the songs were influenced by their Calgary Flood '13 experience. 'Show You There's Hope' earned Cayd the SONGWRITER RUNNER UP at the Breakforth Competition as well as TOP 10 PERFORMER OF THE YEAR . ’Push Through It’ won a spot in the Calgary Folk Fest YOUTH SONGWRITER COMPETITION for Ty.
Their 2017 EP, You+Me with 5 originals was released in July 2017, for Canada's 150. You+Me was produced by Mike Little and recorded at OCL, Evergreen, and Legion Lounge Studios.
2019 will end with a featured spot on the tv show “The Moment” airing in the fall as well as the release of their new single 'Take My Breath Away' to radio.
NewLaw’s songs are on all digital platforms and they can be seen live performing regularly at festivals, concerts, markets, churches, house gigs, sporting events, fundraisers, private events, weddings, coffee shops and pubs. If there is an audience, they are there!

Mariya Stokes

Tuesday Dec 03, 2019
On this episode I chat with a new artist Mariya stokes from Alberta Canada
www.mariyastokes.com With the digital release of her debut single, "Hands on My Body" (February 2019), Calgary based Mariya Stokes introduces herself with a simple, sexy anthem that blurs the lines between country and pop with edgy lyrics and an R&B inspired groove. Produced by Spencer Cheyne (Brett Kissel, Jocelyn Alice) and Justin Kudding (Brett Kissel, Leaving Thomas), at OCL studios (Calgary), this quirky, sex-positive anthem features Stokes unapologetically asking for what she wants, and she hopes the song empowers and inspires other women to do the same.
“I’m so proud of this song and what it says to women everywhere. It’s about owning your body and choices. We’re taught how to say ‘no’, but I think it’s important to know what an enthusiastic ‘HECK, YES’ looks like too, and that there’s no shame in that,” says Stokes. “I hope when people hear this, it makes them feel empowered to ask for what they want and to groove along."
Mariya Stokes - BiographyIf Kacey Musgraves and Meghan Trainor had a country-soul love-child, the result would be Mariya Stokes. Growing up in the small town of Stavely, Alberta an hour south of Calgary, Stokes was raised in her parents' small-town bar, and at eight years old was sneaking in on Friday afternoons to sing with the local jam band. She has been pursuing music ever since; the past year of her career was packed full of shows including opening for multiple-JUNO award winner, Jann Arden at the Palace Theatre in Calgary, and playing stages such as Rogers Hometown Hockey Lethbridge, Country Thunder Alberta, and the Coca-Cola Stage at Calgary Stampede. She is a 2019 and 2018 top-12 Project WILD finisher, a country focused artist development program run by WILD 95.3 FM (Calgary). In May 2019, Stokes was also one of three artists selected to work with 19-time CCMA winner Terri Clark at the National Music Centre during their RBC Master in Residence program. Stokes cares deeply about her community and has volunteered at the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre on multiple songwriting and performance projects over the past five years, including planning and executing two coat drives for the shelter.

Justin Labrash
Thursday Nov 28, 2019
Thursday Nov 28, 2019
On this episode i catch up with Justin Labrash. We talk about his new single, his Christmas single and more. Please give us FIVE stars and remember to share.
“See You in the Stars” is Justin LaBrash’s ninth single released to Canadian country radio in the past three years. This song was also produced by Bart McKay (Brett Kissel, Doc Walker, Adam Gregory) and written by three great Nashville songwriters.
In 2016, Justin was awarded the Fred King Award for Most Promising Entertainer, and in 2018 he was named Saskatchewan’s 'Emerging Artist of the Year' by the Saskatchewan Country Music Association, as well as nominated for Saskatchewan 'Country Artist of the Year' by SaskMusic. On the stage, Justin made his mark from the east to west, playing with some of Canada’s best including The Washboard Union, The Wilkinsons, and Charlie Major. From the prestigious Hank Snow Tribute Festival in Nova Scotia, to the iconic Roxy Cabaret in downtown Vancouver to sold out shows in the Northwest Territories, and his fan base continues to grow with each set. Whether he is rocking the stage with his band at a festival or playing solo with his guitar in a songwriter circle, Justin has a way of engaging and interacting with the audience which leaves them wanting more...maybe it is his subtle Elvis smirk???
His latest singles, “We Ran Out”, “Drunk On Christmas Cookies”, and “Way Crazy” all charted on the Canadian country radio Top 100 country charts. Justin released his first EP, “Roots”, in 2016 and his first full length album, “Friends or Lovers”, in 2018. Justin is currently dividing his time performing and recording across Canada and writing in Nashville.
Justin believes strongly in building communities and “paying it forward”. He and his bandmates support several charities at home and across the country. With his country roots running deep, his big heart, and endless enthusiasm, there is no limit to how far this independent Canadian country artist will go!

A fast paced, uniquely Canadian roller-coaster ride of fresh songs for the holidays…
“At Christmas, every time someone does some small act of kindness or contributes in some way to the betterment of us all, I like to think of it as a person sending a small, heart-shaped, snowflake of kindness.
I am grateful to have had a helping hand in the writing of the songs (100% CANCON) on this project and am so pleased to know that all of my songwriting royalties will be going to worthy causes.
This album is dedicated to Louise. You continue to give me a place that allows me to dream bigger…
Doug Sylvester
Special thanks to all the wonderful artists so gracious with their time and talents in helping to make this charity project come to life. As well, gratitude goes out to the many people who volunteer on a regular basis with the charities supported by this project."
